Mary Edis Shaffer, 68, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017 at her residence.
Mary was born on November 11, 1949 in Peoria, the daughter of Edwin and Margaret Baldwin Herncjar. She married William C. Shaffer III on November 26, 1986 in Springfield.
Mary was a 1967 graduate of Eureka High School. She worked for ISU, AMEDCO, Chicago and Illinois Midland Railroad, and SIU School of Medicine.
She was a member of Calvary Temple, she sang in the choir and was a part of the women’s ministry team. Mary also taught Sunday school and vacation Bible School. She was a past member of First Assembly of God and had attended Cherry Hills Baptist Church. Mary served as President of Women’s Aglow. She enjoyed working with and ministering at the First Step Women’s Center and was a post-abortion counselor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Linda Schlacter and Marie Allen.
She is survived by her husband, William C. Shaffer III; daughters, Angie (Bob) Nesbit of Petersburg, Julie (fiancée, Brent Basler) Lee of Foristell, MO, Elisabeth (Art) Roman of Bolingbrook; step-daughter, Anne (Claus) Shaffer-Lassen of Denmark; step-sons, William (Kaila) Shaffer of Petersburg and James C. (Megan) Shaffer of Wheaton; grandchildren, Jordan, Chelsea, Britteny, Colbie, Case, Julia, Mason, Sophie, Christian, Phililp and Jacob; great-grandson, Braelynn; siblings, Peggy Malcom (caregiver), Walter Herncjar of El Cajon, CA, Marjorie (Daryl) Netherton of Congerville and Janet (Gary) Cobus of St. Michael, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 4-7:00 Monday, December 11, 2017 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
