James Lloyd Sample, 73 of Edinburg, passed away on March 22, 2024 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. Jim was born on Nov. 13, 1950 in Taylorville, the son of Lloyd and Eloise Sample. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1968. He married Sandra Lawrence at Edinburg United Methodist Church on Feb. 20, 1971, and she survives.
Also surviving are his son, Trevor (Katie) Sample of Edinburg, IL and daughter, Amie (David) Mouser of Bloomington, IL; grandchildren, Andrew & Camden Sample and Morgan & Brady Mouser; brother, Owen Sample; sister, Sharon Gowin; and mother-in-law, Helen Border.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Norman.
Jim farmed full time with his brother, Owen, starting in 1966 after their father passed away. For a number of years he raised angus cattle. He served his community in a number of ways over the years. He served on the Mechanicsburg Farm Grain Co-op board and the Edinburg School Board. He enjoyed keeping the scorebook for years for Edinburg Jr. High and High School basketball. Jim served on the Edinburg Cemetery Association board for over 30 years. He was passionate about restoring graves and honoring Veterans at the cemetery. He was a contributing member of the Edinburg Lions Club for many years, serving in multiple positions, including President, chair of the bingo committee, and volunteering at the Labor Day Picnic. Jim was a member of the Edinburg United Methodist Church, where he served on the trustee committee. Jim will be remembered for his work ethic, generosity, love of farming and his family. Jim enjoyed Fighting Illini basketball, Mopar cars, NHRA drag racing, and Oliver tractors.
A visitation will be held Thursday, March 28 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Edinburg United Methodist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow.
